We would like to inform you that software updates for all Nextcloud instances are now carried out automatically overnight. Updates normally take place between 01:00 and 04:00 (CET), without prior notice. For critical updates that need to be installed as quickly as possible, we reserve the right to extend this time window slightly.
This new automated process allows us to install new Nextcloud updates for our customers as quickly as possible and makes us much more efficient in managing the steadily growing number of cloud instances.
Staging
We use a gradual update method, also known as staging. As a first step, a maximum of 10–20% of Nextcloud instances are updated before the server updates are rolled out in stages to 50% and more of the instances.
This allows us to identify any potential problems early and respond accordingly. Of course, we will continue to thoroughly test all new Nextcloud server versions before releasing them for the production environment.
The method has proved successful
We have been using this update process successfully for several months now and are very pleased with the results. The staging method allows us to ensure that all Nextcloud instances are kept up to date without noticeably affecting availability.
The new process is a blessing for us. As we have more and more Nextcloud clients, we can now roll out updates much more efficiently – and without any night shifts. The automated process also means fewer errors. The next morning, the client has a freshly updated Nextcloud and a well-rested System Engineer. Win-win!
